Environmental awareness is part of life in Portland and part of our culture at The Heathman Hotel. That awareness and an active citizen population earned Portland the title #1 Green City in a recent study by SustainLane, an online resource for sustainability. The “Green” City is also #3 in a recent report by Earth Day Network.

The Heathman Hotel is committed to “Going Green” and reducing our carbon footprint. The sustainability of our environment is extremely important to every colleague at the Heathman Hotel. This new package touts our commitment to environmental awareness and our efforts to help Portland reduce our carbon footprint. With every package you book, our green-friendly hotel will plant a tree in conjunction with Portland’s Friends of Trees organization.

The Heathman Hotel was the first hotel in Portland to be recognized by the Energy Trust of Oregon for the commitment to the environment. Furthermore, the Heathman Hotel was the first and only downtown hotel to partner with Pacific Power's renewable energy program; 30% of all the electricity used by our guests and employees originates from carbon neutral wind energy!  By thinking green, we can all change the world one tree, one action at a time. GREEN FACTS

• The Heathman Hotel just completed a four (4) million dollar 99% landfill-free "green" remodel in 2009.
• Environmental Design + Construction
• The Heathman Hotel partnered with Energy Trust of Oregon, Viking Energy Services and Environmental Controls in early 2007 to work towards becoming ENERGY STAR certified, and is currently an Energy Star partner.
• The Heathman is the first hotel in Portland to complete energy efficiency upgrades and receive financial incentives from Energy Trust to supplement its efforts.
• The Heathman Hotel was recognized in October 2007 by Pacific Power - Mid America along with 14 other Oregon businesses who are committed to sustainable practices.
• The upgrades will save an estimated 149,941 kilowatt hours of electricity and 15,197 therms of natural gas each year
• On a monthly average the hotel will see a savings of 25 - 35 percent of the hotel’s energy costs and natural gas costs
• The Heathman Hotel has partnered with Pacific Power to "Go Green" by purchasing 30% of our electricity through Pacific Power's Blue Sky renewable energy program.
• We are proud to announce our partnership with Dry Cleaning Station - who implement a 100% "Green" dry cleaning process.
• Other ‘Green’ initiatives at the Heathman:
  • Transportation - The Heathman subsidizes TriMet (public transportation) passes for 60 percent of its employees each month
  • Lighting Upgrade - The Heathman is currently in the process of changing every lightbulb in its building to a 3rd generation brighter - more energy effecient sustainable compact, saving 200,000 KWH
  • Van Duzer Partnership - In all guestrooms, the Heathman offers wines from Van Duzer vineyards, one of Oregon’s sustainable and eco-friendly wineries located 60 miles from downtown Portland
  • Go Green Package - The Heathman will donate $25 of every package purchased to Portland-based Friends of Trees, covering the cost of planting a tree in the city.
  • Towel and Linen Policy - The Heathman offers green towel and linen service for all guests.
  • Plastic Key Cards - The Heathman is one of the few hotels in the region that mandates the use of compostable key cards.  The key cards are made of a special plastic resin that fully compost in 18 months.
  • Recycling - The Hotel audits waste and currently recycles 72% of its waste by volume.
  • The Heathman Hotel is a supporter of Portland Parks and Recreation, preserving green-space, for the future.

  • The Heathman sustainability efforts have been featured in numerous publications including nationally syndicated Green Right Now.
